In the Gospel today, the disciples are arguing over the problem they encounter in curing a boy possessed by an unclean spirit. The appearance of Jesus both calms and overwhelms them with a sense of wonder. They approach Jesus and ask him to do what they could not. Also, because of his love and care for his son, the father of the boy asks Jesus to cure his son. Jesus answers, “If you can do anything, take pity on them.” With this, Jesus assures the boy’s father that everything is possible for him who believes. With this statement, the father of the boy exclaims, “I do believe, let me
overcome my unbelief.” Jesus then cures the boy.
How often in our own lives do we start to doubt the fulfillment of our requests, especially when we feel that the answers we seek have not been met? Yet, Jesus reminds us through the Gospel today “This can come only by prayer.” Are we to put our beliefs and future in the power of Jesus?
