A saying in missionary life states: “When you go to the missions, do not think that you are bringing God there, because He was there before you arrived.”
Missionary life is not easy. In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out 72 disciples for missionary work. Jesus instructs them to carry no purse, no extra clothing, and only the barest of belongings. They are to go and proclaim God’s Word of Salvation in difficult places and in trying conditions. All they have is their faith and trust in God’s Providence. Perseverance, trust, and courage are three of the virtues that a missionary needs to have. Through their witnessing, they touch the hearts of others.
Are we proclaiming God’s message of love through our words or our lives? Are we persistent, persevering, and courageous in being missionaries in spite of the many challenges and hindrances we meet along the way? How can we best proclaim God’s Word within our family and communities, especially to those who are not actively practicing their faith?
