From his earliest days, Raymond always had a special love and devotion to the Blessed Mother. Born in Spain, Raymond was able to study and finish his education at an early age, becoming a well-known teacher of his day.
As a result of his devotion to the Blessed Mother, and his great love for God, he decided to forfeit his worldly fame and enter the order of the Dominicans. He was a very humble man and through his works and goodness, he was able to attract many others to God.
One of Raymond’s relatives was the King of Aragon, and together with the king and St. Peter Nolasco, Raymond founded the order of Our Lady of Ransom. The men belonging to this order were very brave and devoted themselves to saving poor Christians who had been captured by the pagan Moors. They would collect money and pay a ransom for these captives in order to free them.
Legend has it that King James, who was living a sinful life, came to realize the power of God and became a disciple of Raymond and a devout Christian through a miracle performed by Raymond. The saint lived to be 100 years old.
Lessons
Saint Raymond shows us that you don’t have to be famous or wealthy or depend on the world to influence people when you have the power of God. Although he gave up his worldly fame as a teacher, he influenced more people, including kings, through his faith and devotion to God.
Prayer
Lord, help us to remember that without You we can do nothing and with You all things are possible. May we, through Your grace and power, bring many souls to truth. We ask this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
