Faith is at the core of our belief in the Son of God. It is something we all strive for and struggle with, depending on what happens in our lives. When things are going well, it’s easy to have faith, but so much harder when tragedy strikes.
If you search the New International Version (NIV) for “Faith” you will find it in 458 verses. In the English Standard Version (ESV), you will see 475 results. And, the New King James Version (NKJV), you’ll have 391 results. You can search any translation on Bible Gateway to see how many times a word appears and each search will reveal a list of verses to explore.
It can seem overwhelming to try and study this way and find the inspiration you need. But, if you follow the links above, each of the translations searched recommend that you read Hebrews 11. Hebrews 11 gives us a guide to “Faith in Action” which is worth reading in depth.
But, what are a few Bible verses on faith that you can get started with now?
Here are 6 verses you can turn to at difficult times:
1. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
2. Matthew 17:20
“.. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (NIV)
3. Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the holy Spirit. (NABRE)
4. Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. (NRSVUE)
5. John 6:35
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (ESV)
6. 1 Corinthians 16:13
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. (NIV)
From the above passages, ask yourself the following questions:
1. What is your reflection on John 3:16?
2. What is mustard seed faith in the Bible?
3. What is Romans 15 talking about?
4. Why is faith so important to God?
5. What does it mean when they say Jesus is the bread of life?
6. In 1 Corinthians 13:2, how does faith move a mountain?
Where to go from here.
You can dig deeper into each of the verses listed above with the free resources, like Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary on Bible Gateway, or by upgrading to Bible Gateway Plus. Or, maybe you can start new searches by pulling out key phrases from some of the verses above. Searching for “bread of life” for example, only occurs twice in the King James Version (KJV). Both in the book of John, where you read more from Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary.
But, let’s get back to Hebrews 11 for a moment. In the CSB Tony Evans Study Bible, on Hebrews 11:1-2, Dr. Evans says, “To exercise faith is to have confidence about an expectation without visible proof that it will happen. What makes this confidence possible? The trustworthiness of the object of faith. The question we must answer is this: Is God trustworthy? And as I like to say, faith is acting like God is telling the truth. Notice that each of the heroes of the faith mentioned in this chapter acted on what they believed.”
Read Hebrews 11 in full and ask yourself how you can be like each hero and become the gift of God you were meant to be.
