Saint Ephrem the Syrian, also known as Ephrem of Edessa, lived during the 4th century in the city of Nisibis, which was then a part of the Roman Empire. Born to Christian parents, Ephrem grew up immersed in the teachings of the Church. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, fasting, and service to others from a young age. Despite his desire for solitude and asceticism, Ephrem’s deep love for Christ led him to serve the Church as a deacon.
