Born on January 31, 1597, in Fontcouverte, France, John Francis Regis grew up in a devout Catholic family. His early years were marked by a deep sense of piety and compassion for the less fortunate. Inspired by the lives of the Jesuit missionaries, he entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 19.
Regis dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the service of God and others. He spent much of his life ministering to the marginalized and neglected, particularly in rural areas afflicted by poverty and spiritual neglect. His missionary zeal led him to preach missions, catechize the ignorant, and establish schools and shelters for the poor.
Despite facing numerous hardships and dangers, including harsh weather conditions and hostile opposition, Regis remained undeterred in his mission. His tireless efforts bore abundant fruit, as countless souls were converted and transformed through his compassionate ministry.
Regis’s life was characterized by humility, simplicity, and selflessness. He exemplified the Jesuit motto, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God), in all that he did. He died on December 31, 1640, at the age of 43, leaving behind a legacy of holiness and service that continues to inspire Christians to this day.
