Saint Norbert, born in 1080 in Xanten, Germany, led a life of remarkable transformation. Initially, he pursued a path of worldly pleasures as a courtier in Emperor Henry V’s court. However, a dramatic turning point came when he was nearly struck by lightning during a storm. This near-death experience ignited a profound conversion within him.
Following his conversion, Norbert embraced a life of penance and deep spiritual devotion. He was ordained as a priest and soon after, founded the Premonstratensian Order in 1120. This order, also known as the Norbertines, emphasized a return to the strict observance of the Augustinian rule, focusing on communal life, poverty, and preaching.
Norbert’s dedication did not go unnoticed. In 1126, he was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg. In this role, he tirelessly worked to reform the clergy and restore discipline within the Church. His efforts faced significant resistance, yet his commitment to spiritual renewal never wavered. He was a fervent advocate for the Church’s independence from secular influences and labored to ensure the integrity of its teachings and practices.
