Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Our Lady of Mount Carmel holds a special place in Catholic devotion as the patroness of the Carmelite Order. The origins of devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel trace back to the 12th century when a group of hermits settled on Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. These hermits dedicated themselves to a life of prayer and contemplation, seeking to follow in the footsteps of the Old Testament prophet Elijah, who was believed to have lived on Mount Carmel.

These hermits developed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, viewing her as their spiritual mother and protector. They built a chapel in her honor and entrusted themselves to her maternal care. Over time, the Carmelite Order grew and spread throughout Europe, carrying with it devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel as an integral part of its spiritual heritage.

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Brown Scapular, became a visible sign of affiliation with Mary and commitment to living a life of prayer and devotion. According to tradition, wearing the Brown Scapular signifies a special relationship with Mary and a desire to imitate her virtues.
