St. Maximilian Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894, in Zduńska Wola, Poland. From a young age, he exhibited a deep commitment to his Catholic faith and a desire to serve God. He joined the Conventual Franciscans and was ordained a priest in 1918. Known for his deep spirituality and missionary zeal, Kolbe founded the Militia Immaculatae (Army of the Immaculate), an organization dedicated to spreading devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland, Kolbe continued his work of spreading faith and providing aid to those in need. He established a network of shelters and used his publications to counteract the regime’s propaganda. His efforts made him a target for Nazi persecution.
In 1941, Kolbe was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. There, he continued to minister to fellow prisoners, providing spiritual support and solace. When a prisoner escaped from the camp, the Nazis selected ten men to be executed in reprisal. In a remarkable act of self-sacrifice, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of one of the condemned men, a father of a family.
Kolbe’s selfless act of love and sacrifice was a testament to his deep faith and charity. He died on August 14, 1941, from starvation and dehydration after weeks of suffering. He was canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II and is recognized as a martyr of charity.
