St. Alphonsus Rodriguez was born in 1532 in Segovia, Spain. He grew up in a pious family and initially pursued a career as a merchant. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he faced personal tragedies, including the deaths of his wife and children. Overwhelmed with grief, he sought solace in prayer and discerned a call to the religious life.

At the age of 40, Alphonsus joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became a lay brother. He was assigned to the college in Majorca, where he worked as a porter, welcoming guests and taking care of the needs of the community. Despite his humble position, Alphonsus dedicated himself to prayer, service, and the spiritual guidance of others.

His deep faith and wisdom drew many to him for counsel. He became known for his kindness and understanding, always ready to listen to those in need. St. Alphonsus lived a life marked by humility, charity, and unwavering trust in God. He passed away in 1617 and was canonized in 1888. Today, he is regarded as a patron saint of laypeople and those in humble professions.
