Story of St. John the Apostle:
St. John the Apostle, one of the twelve apostles, is often referred to as the “Beloved Disciple” due to his close relationship with Jesus. He was the brother of St. James the Greater, and together they were known as the “Sons of Thunder” because of their fiery personalities. John was a fisherman by trade before Jesus called him to follow Him.
John’s life was marked by deep loyalty and love for Jesus. He was present at many key moments in Jesus’ ministry, including the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. It is said that he was the only apostle who remained with Jesus during the Crucifixion, standing at the foot of the cross with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Jesus entrusted him with the care of His mother as He was dying, a testament to the special bond between them.
After Jesus’ Ascension, John became a leader of the early Christian community. He wrote the Gospel of John, three epistles, and the book of Revelation. John lived a long life, surviving martyrdom attempts, and he died in exile on the island of Patmos around 100 AD. His writings continue to inspire Christians to this day, emphasizing love, light, and faith in Christ.
Practical Lessons:
- Lesson 1: Be Present for Others: St. John’s loyalty to Jesus, even at His Crucifixion, teaches us the importance of being there for our loved ones in their times of need. Whether it’s offering support during a difficult time, being present at family events, or just lending a listening ear, we can follow St. John’s example by showing up for those who need us most.
- Lesson 2: Embrace the Power of Forgiveness: In his letters, St. John stresses the importance of love and forgiveness. In our own lives, we can practice forgiveness by letting go of grudges and offering reconciliation, whether in our families, friendships, or workplaces. Forgiveness allows us to move forward with peace and build stronger relationships.
Prayer to St. John the Apostle:
St. John, Beloved Disciple of the Lord, who stayed faithful to Christ through His suffering and joy, help us to be more faithful in our own lives. Teach us to love deeply, to forgive freely, and to serve others with the same devotion you showed. May your example inspire us to be present for others and to live lives of faith and compassion. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Quote from St. John:
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God.” (1 John 4:7)
