St. André Bessette was born in 1845 in Mont-Saint-Grégoire, near Quebec, Canada.
He faced fragile health from a young age and lost both parents early, which forced him to seek work wherever he could. At 25, he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross, but because of his weak health and limited education, his superiors hesitated to accept him. Eventually, they recognized his deep faith and humility, and he was assigned as the doorkeeper at Collège Notre-Dame in Montreal. There, Brother André greeted visitors, comforted the sick, and encouraged devotion to St. Joseph. Many reported miraculous healings through his prayers, drawing crowds from far and wide. Despite his simple role, he oversaw the building of what would become Saint Joseph’s Oratory on Mount Royal—now a major pilgrimage site. He died in 1937, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, faith, and unwavering trust in God’s care. Canonized in 2010, St. André Bessette remains a powerful witness to the impact of humble service done for God’s glory.
Practical Lessons:
Perform Small Acts with Love: Brother André’s job as a porter may have seemed insignificant, but his warmth and kindness changed countless lives. In your day-to-day tasks—whether greeting clients at work or helping a family member—focus on treating others with genuine care.
Extend a Warm Welcome: He spent hours listening to people’s worries and praying with them. You can bring this spirit of welcome into your own home or workplace by offering a listening ear, a cup of coffee, or a simple word of encouragement.
Persevere Through Hardship: Poor health and initial rejection didn’t stop St. André from following God’s call. If you face obstacles—like an illness or a setback at work—keep going. Seek practical help and spiritual support to stay on course.
Cultivate Devotion: Brother André credited St. Joseph for every healing. Whether it’s a devotion to a favorite saint or a daily prayer routine, find a spiritual practice that grounds you and turn to it often for strength.
