St. Ignatius of Loyola

St. Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491 in the Basque region of Spain, began his life as a soldier. After being wounded in battle, he experienced a profound spiritual conversion during his recovery. Inspired by the lives of saints and the teachings of Christ, Ignatius dedicated himself to a life of prayer, penance, and service to God.

Ignatius pursued studies in theology and eventually founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, in 1540. The Jesuits became known for their commitment to education, missionary work, and service to the Church. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, a series of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices, became a cornerstone of Jesuit spirituality and a guide for spiritual growth and discernment.

St. Ignatius emphasized the importance of finding God in all things and encouraged his followers to seek God’s will through discernment and prayer. His teachings continue to influence countless individuals in their spiritual journeys and commitments to justice and service.
