The Bible and Trees

Common ash treeNational Arbor Day is always celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on best tree planting times in their area.

God’s creation of trees furnishes us with two of life’s essentials: food and oxygen. They also provide shelter, medicine, tools, and more. Without trees, our life on earth would be impossible.

What does the Bible say about trees?

Revelation 22:1-2 (NLT)

Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

Psalm 1:1-3 (NRSV)

Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
    or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
    planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.

She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed.

Isaiah 55:10-13 (NIrV)

The rain and the snow
    come down from the sky.
They do not return to it
    without watering the earth.
They make plants come up and grow.
The plants produce seeds for farmers.
They also produce food for people to eat.
The words I speak are like that.
They will not return to me without producing results.
They will accomplish what I want them to.
They will do exactly what I sent them to do.
My people, you will go out of Babylon with joy.
You will be led out of it in peace.
The mountains and hills
will burst into song as you go.
And all the trees in the fields
    will clap their hands.
Juniper trees will grow where there used to be bushes that had thorns on them.
And myrtle trees will grow where there used to be thorns.
That will bring me great fame.
It will be a lasting reminder of what I can do.
    It will stand forever.
